Thursday at Redlands California

Back at Redlands California Temple. I don’t know if I have less time than I did on the first 10 of these, or if I burn out and get tired going on, but I seem to get less done each day. I extended the textures, and added windows, but overall I feel like I made less progress than I hoped. Still I think I made visible progress today despite my lack of time. The big fun remains, the tower and the entryway will be very interesting to do, when I get there.

Oakland California

Thursday at Oakland California

Back at Oakland California Temple.

Just working my way down from the spires. Today I added the tree of life motif to the spires.

It looks like a simple bit of geometry, but it’s not. Getting one set done inspired my and I pushed my way through to getting all 5 spires finished. I also had some time a few months back when I worked on Oakland and I added the North Frieze and the inscriptions to the north side of the temple.

Saturday at Redlands California

This won’t look like much, but there are tiny details in the textured area that don’t show up in this image. I did not get as far with this as I hoped, mainly because Blender crashed and set me back a few hours worth of work. Once you have figured out how to model a shape, reproducing it does not take as long as making it the first time. This means I recovered just fine from the crash, but I would have had more done if it had never happened.

Saturday at Oakland California

I have been dreading this one, slightly. Mainly because of the fantastically detailed spires. I assumed they would be difficult, and it turned out I was right. I tried 7 different ways to automatically generate the details, but could not get the parameters I needed to work. So then I hand built one by hand, only to notice after the fact that the details are strikingly deceptive, and that what looks like rungs sticking out of the sides of the spire are in fact overhangs and insets. None of that probably made any sense to you. Anyway, here is last months render:

And here is today’s, upon which I spent all my time on the not yet finished spires:

And just for fun, here are the insanely detailed and still not finished spires:

Friday at Newport Beach California

I am coming down with something tonight. I have had a sore throat all day, and some achy muscles. I had my kids to take care of, and my usual responsibilities. End result is that not much got done on this temple today. When I come back around to it I will have a good start at least. I have temporary textures on the model now. These were created by a program called Building Maker that does not exist anymore.  It worked off of photos taken from above, you drew cubes, lined them up on various angles. In the end it helped me to get the height right, and it made the temporary textures for me.

Los Angeles California

Los Angeles Is Rendering

The Los Angeles temple is finally rendering. This one has been off and of for a while, and the detail I put into it is exquisite, even the stuff you will not see because the camera does not get that close. Ah well, maybe in a sequel. This is a rock of a temple. A very sturdy building, built just after the war. One of David O. McKay’s temples, and the one that started the whole “Moroni Must Face East” myth.
