History

Newspapers in the Bahia area began circulating news of plans being developed by the Church to build a temple in Bahia as early as December 2016, 3 and a half years before it was officially announced. A graphic showing a design similar to Belém Brazil or Quito Ecuador, neither of which had a publicly released render at that point, appeared in the papers in April 2017.[1]Preita, Sergio. “Así Será El Mayor Templo Mormón De Sudamérica.” La Nueva, 24 Apr. 2017. The graphic showed a landscape plan that included support buildings, and a location. Announcement

On April 5, 2020, President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to construct the Bahía Blanca Argentina Temple at the closing session of the 190th Annual General Conference. Bahía Blanca is a major port city of Argentina, located on the Napostá Grande River, just upstream from the Atlantic Ocean bay for which it is named. The temple will be the fifth to be constructed in the nation of Argentina and will help reach Church members living in the southern half of the country. The temple was announced in conjunction with 7 other temples.

Church architectural engineers visited the property in June 2021 to finalize plans for the complex. Government approvals and permits are being secured with the hopes of beginning construction before the end of 2021.

Groundbreaking

A groundbreaking ceremony for the Bahía Blanca Argentina Temple was held on Saturday, 9 April 2022. The special event was attended by several community members, including local civic leaders and was by invitation only. Ground was broken on the 8.14-acre site at Aldea Romana over Cabrera Avenue on Saturday, April 9, 2022.

Elder Joaquín E. Costa of the Quorum of the Seventy and second counselor in the Church’s South America South Area presidency presided at the groundbreaking ceremony.

As part of the dedicatory prayer, Elder Joaquín E. Costa, said, “We thank the authorities of the different governments through the many years that the gospel has been shared here. Dedication Order

The Bahía Blanca Argentina Temple will be the fifth temple built in Argentina, following the Buenos Aires Argentina Temple (1986), the Córdoba Argentina Temple (2015), the Salta Argentina Temple (under construction), and the Mendoza Argentina Temple (under construction).
