History
In 1843, missionaries set sail from the North Atlantic to Tahiti. The Prophet Joseph Smith and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles called four missionaries to take the gospel “unto the islands of the sea” in the Pacific.
Announcement
On April 7, 2024, President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to construct the Uturoa French Polynesia Temple at the 194th Annual General Conference. The temple was announced in conjunction with 14 other temples.
At the time of the temple announcement, the Pacific Area was celebrating the 180th anniversary of the missionaries’ arrival. There were nearly 30,000 Latter-day Saints in approximately 100 congregations in French Polynesia.
