Description

Jakarta is the country’s capital and largest city. It is on the northwest coast of Java—the most populous island in the world with over 150 million people.

History

The first missionaries arrived in Indonesia in 1970 and organized the first congregation one month later. At the time of the announcement, there were more than 7,500 Latter-day Saints in nearly 25 congregations in Indonesia.[1]”The Church of Jesus Christ Will Build 15 New Houses of the Lord,” The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints News Release, 2 Apr. 2023. https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/april-2023-general-conference-new-temples.

In November 2019, President Russell M. Nelson concluded a weeklong Southeast Asia ministry in Jakarta, Indonesia, following visits to Vietnam, Cambodia, and Singapore. “This is the 50th anniversary of the Church here in Indonesia,” he said at a devotional held at the Ritz-Carlton hotel and broadcasted to the 24 congregations in the country. He continued, “May I express, on behalf of the leadership of the Church, our heartfelt gratitude for the faithfulness of Church members here in Indonesia.” He praised the members for pledging 5,000 hours of community service including food for the hungry, blood drives, clean-up and beautification projects, and the assembly of hygiene kits.

After encouraging the members to draw near to the Lord and his teachings, President Nelson said, “Maybe some of you have wondered if President Nelson is going to say anything about a temple in Indonesia. You will determine when that happens.” He explained that a sufficient number of members is needed to staff and operate a temple. “It takes a long time to build a temple,” he said.[2]The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints News Release, “Prophet Concludes Southeast Asia Ministry in Indonesia,” 21 Nov. 2019.
