Description

The Kyiv Ukraine Temple is located in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. It is the 11th temple in Europe, and the first located within the territory of the former Soviet Union.

History

Announcement

The plans to build a temple in Ukraine were announced by the LDS Church on 20 July 1998 by President Gordon B. Hinckley during the dedication of the Monticello Utah Temple.^[1]”Kyiv Ukraine Temple,” MormonTemples.org. Accessed 31 May 2017.

Groundbreaking

The temple was delayed for nine years as the church encountered difficulty in obtaining the three to four hectares of land it wanted for the project.

On 23 June 2007, ground was broken for the construction project by Paul B. Pieper, who was then the first counselor in the presidency of the church’s Europe East Area.

100 members were invited to attend a meeting in the on-site Chapel, which had been finished prior to the commmencement of the Temple construction.

Open House

The was open to the public for a two-week open house from 7–21 August 2010.

Cultural Celebration

A Cultural Celebration was held in conjunction with the Dedication on 28 August 2010 at the Palats Ukraina. ^[5]Gerry Avant, “Mormons Flock to Kiev for Temple Dedication,” Deseret News, 28 August 2010. It featured members and traditional dances from countries then served by the new temple, including Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Bulgaria, Russia, Moldova, Romania, and Georgia.

Dedication

The temple was dedicated on 29 August 2010 by President Thomas S. Monson. “It is your temple now,” he said at the cornerstone ceremony, “but in a few minutes we will give it to the Lord. Then you will come to His temple, and His spirit will come to you.”

The inscriptions on the Kyiv Ukraine Temple are engraved and painted black. The language is Ukranian. There are 3 inscriptions on the temple. It is above the North (North East) Windows and again above entry doors on west (North West face) as follows:

СВЯТИНЯ ДЛЯ ГОСПОДА ◊ ДІМ ГОСПОДА

And is above the North (North East) East windows as follows

СВЯТИНЯ ДЛЯ ГОСПОДА
ДІМ ГОСПОДА

It is pronounced ‘SVYATYNYA DLYA HOSPODA DIM HOSPODA’.
