Description
History
One in every nine residents of Wyoming, or approximately 68,000 people, claim membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Wyoming has a significant place in the history of the Church, as pioneers traveled across the state in their westward migration to Utah, primarily from the 1840s to the 1860s. Casper is in east-central Wyoming.[1]The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints News Release, “At April 2021 Conference, Prophet Announces 20 More Temples to Be Constructed,” 4 Apr. 2021.
The new temple was announced shortly after the creation of a second stake in Casper in 2020. The Church’s first stake in Casper was organized in 1962.
Announcement
Plans to construct the Casper Wyoming Temple were announced by President Russell M. Nelson on 4 April 2021, at the 191st Annual General Conference.[2]The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints News Release, “At April 2021 Conference, Prophet Announces 20 More Temples to Be Constructed,” 4 Apr. 2021.
It will be the second temple in Wyoming, joining the Star Valley Wyoming Temple located in Afton. Attendance at the temple site will be by invitation only.[3]”Groundbreaking Date Set for the Casper Wyoming Temple,” The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints News Release, 3 Sept. 2021.

Groundbreaking
The groundbreaking of the Casper Wyoming Temple was presided over by Elder S. Gifford Nielsen, North America Central Area president, on Oct. 9, 2021. Strong winds and cold temperatures caused most of the event to be moved inside a meetinghouse, but the breaking of ground outside still took place.
In his dedicatory prayer on the site, Elder Nielsen said, “Our hearts are full of gratitude as we contemplate the magnitude of what is about to happen. This gathering is an answer to many prayers. We can only imagine the celebration on the other side of the veil among those whose sacrifices prepared the way for the blessings we enjoy today. Our hearts rejoice with them.”[7]“Groundbreaking Held for Casper Wyoming Temple.” newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org, 9 Oct. 2021, newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/groundbreaking-held-for-casper-wyoming-temple.

Details
Location
A 13.3-acre parcel located at the intersection of N 800 West and W 100 North has been chosen as the location for the temple.
Site and Landscaping
The temple’s landscaping reflects the rocky prairie of the region, accomplished using large boulders and stones along with grasses to create movement and offer texture. Native plants dot the grounds. Multi-trunk trees add depth and interest, while evergreens, adapted to the harsh climate, provide winter interest. Concern for water conservation and respect for the location’s unique qualities have been driving forces in this temple’s design. The landscaping was done by Western Meadows of Payson, Utah.
