Description

There were nearly 1.5 million Latter-day Saints in Brazil, organized into approximately 2,175 congregations.

Florianópolis is in southern Brazil and is a port city on the Atlantic Ocean and a popular tourism location because of its beaches. The population of the city is about 540,000 and the metropolitan area about 1.1 million. The city is the capital of and second-largest city in the state of Santa Catarina, which has about 7.6 million residents.

There are three Latter-day Saint stakes in the Florianópolis area and 11 total in Santa Catarina. The first of those was organized in 1982.[1]Schneider, David, “Learn about the areas of the 3 most recently announced temples in Brazil,” The Church News, Deseret News, 31 August 2024. https://www.thechurchnews.com/temples/2024/08/31/latter-day-saint-temples-in-brazil-goiania-joao-pessoa-florianopolis/

History

Missionaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints began preaching in southern Brazil in 1928. The Portuguese translation of the Book of Mormon was published in 1940, igniting a new era of growth in the country including temples.

At time of announcement, Florianópolis was in the temple district of the Curitiba Brazil Temple, about a 4 1/2-hour drive to the north.[2]Schneider, David, “Learn about the areas of the 3 most recently announced temples in Brazil,” The Church Nes, Deseret NEws, 31 August 2024. https://www.thechurchnews.com/temples/2024/08/31/latter-day-saint-temples-in-brazil-goiania-joao-pessoa-florianopolis/
