Description
History
Idaho is home to more than 460,000 members of the Church in nearly 1,200 congregations. Early Church pioneers settled in Idaho in 1855. Several Church presidents are natives of Idaho, including Presidents Harold B. Lee, Ezra Taft Benson and Howard W. Hunter.
Announcement
On 3 October 2021, President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to construct the Rexburg Idaho North Temple. It was announced in conjunction with 12 other temples.[1]“The Prophet Announces 13 New Temples.” newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org, 3 Oct. 2021, newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/october-2021-general-conference-new-temples.
When the Teton River Idaho Temple was announced, the population of Rexburg was approximately 39,500, making it the smallest city in the world to have two temples. Other small cities at the time with two temples included South Jordan, Utah (population 77,500); St. George, Utah (population 95,000); and Provo, Utah (population 115,000).
The Teton River Idaho Temple was announced in the 11th anniversary year of the Rexburg Idaho Temple.
The Teton River Idaho Temple will be the ninth temple in Idaho.

Groundbreaking Announced
On February 20, 2024, the groundbreaking announcement for the Teton River Idaho Temple was made.[5]”News for Temples in Idaho and Florida,” The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 20 Feb. 2024.
Groundbreaking
Ghe groundbreaking of the Teton River Idaho Temple was presided over by Elder Ricardo P. Giménez, a General Authority Seventy and second counselor in the North America Central Area presidency, on June 1, 2024. Others in attendance included Elder Alvin F. Meredith III, a General Authority Seventy and president of nearby BYU–Idaho, and his wife, Sister Jennifer Meredith; Idaho Lt. Gov. Scott Bedke and his wife, Sarah Bedke; Rexburg Mayor Jerry Merrill and his wife, Marianne Merrill; and Sugar City Mayor Steven Adams and his wife, Michelle Adams.
Elder Giménez testified that the infinite sacrifice of the Savior, Jesus Christ, is the reason for the strength acquired through keeping covenants made in the holy temples.
“Help us, O Father, to secure our foundation upon Jesus Christ, to be able to stand strong and secure because our spiritual foundation is solid and immovable,” Elder Giménez said as part of his dedicatory prayer on the site. “Because of this, we ask Thee, Father, for Thy help in our efforts to build ourselves and be prepared to partake of the eternal blessings available in Thy holy houses.”
