Pachuca is located about 75 miles northeast of Mexico City. The temple will be the first in the state of Hidalgo. Pachuca, formally known as Pachuca de Soto, is the capital and largest city in Hidalgo with a population of about 277,000.[1]”The Church of Jesus Christ Will Build 18 New Houses of the Lord,” The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints News Release, 2 Oct. 2022.

History

Announced

On October 2, 2022, President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to construct the Tula Mexico Temple at the October 2022 General Conference.[2]”The Church of Jesus Christ Will Build 18 New Houses of the Lord,” The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints News Release, 2 Oct. 2022, https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/october-2022-general-conference-new-temples.

After announcing 14 locations during his closing address at October 2022 general conference, President Russell M. Nelson shared a rare insight into the reason for the final four locations he would then announce. President Nelson described an emerging concern regarding members’ access to temples.

“We are also planning to build multiple temples in selected large metropolitan areas where travel time to an existing temple is a major challenge,” he said. “Therefore, I am pleased to announce four additional locations near Mexico City where new temples will be built.”

The four Temples announced, Pachuca, Tula, Toluca and Cuernavaca, will each be within 30 miles of the center of Mexico City, the country’s capital and largest temple.[3]Jensen, Ryan. “People in Mexico react to President Nelson announcing 4 new temples.” Church News, 10 Jan. 2024, www.thechurchnews.com/temples/2022/10/4/23384214/october-2022-general-conference-mexico-city-church-members-react-president-nelson-4-new-temples.
