Description

Colombia is home to around 210,000 Latter-day Saints in nearly 250 congregations.

History

Missionary work began in Colombia in 1966. The first members of the Church lived in Cali and Bogotá. Cali is the second largest city in Colombia.[1]The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints News Release, “At April 2021 Conference, Prophet Announces 20 More Temples to Be Constructed,” 4 Apr. 2021. Colombia is home to around 210,000 Latter-day Saints in nearly 250 congregations. The Colombia Cali Mission was organized in 1975, and the first stake in the city was created in 1978.

Plans to construct the Cali Colombia Temple were announced by President Russell M. Nelson on 4 April 2021, at the 191st Annual General Conference.[2]The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints News Release, “At April 2021 Conference, Prophet Announces 20 More Temples to Be Constructed,” 4 Apr. 2021.

The Cali Colombia Temple will be the country’s third temple.

Location Announced

On 23 September 2021 it was announced that the Cali Colombia Temple will be built on a 3.14-acre site in the La Flora neighborhood of Cali. [3]”Temple Site Locations Announced in Four Latin American Countries,” The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints News Release, 23 Sept. 2021.

Also on September 23, 2021, an official exterior rendering of the Cali Colombia Temple was released.

Open House/Groundbreaking Announced

It was announced on 9 December 2024 that the groundbreaking ceremony for the Cali Colombia Temple will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2025. Elder Jorge T. Becerra, President of the Church’s South America Northwest Area, will preside at the event.

Attendance will be by invitation only. Groundbreaking

Ground was broken for the Cali Colombia Temple on March 1, 2025, with Elder Jorge T. Becerra — a General Authority Seventy and president of the Church’s South America Northwest Area — presiding. Among the civic leaders and community members in attendance was Cali Mayor Alejandro Eder, who spoke on the freedom of religion and the local impact this temple will have.

In his dedicatory prayer on the site and construction process, Elder Becerra prayed: “We ask Thee to help each of us to become renewed in our efforts to become true followers of Jesus Christ. Help us to live the gospel and more fully become converted to Thy Son.”
