History

Announcement

President Russell M. Nelson, 17th President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, announced the Lagos Nigeria Temple on Oct. 7, 2018, during the Sunday afternoon session of October 2018 general conference. Location Announcement

On September 11, 2023, the location for the Lagos Nigeria Temple was announced as a 2.7-acre site located at the intersection of Rumens Road and Bourdillon Road in the Ikoyi neighborhood of Lagos. Plans call for a single-story temple of approximately 19,800 square feet. An arrival center and patron housing will also be constructed on the site.[1]The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints News Release, “Two Temple Sites in Nigeria Announced,” 11 Sept. 2023.

Render Released

On March 24, 2025, the official exterior rendering for the Lagos Nigeria Temple was released to the public.[2]”Milestones Announced for Five Temples Around the World,” The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints News Release, 24 Mar. 2025.

Groundbreaking Announced

The Church announced the groundbreaking of the Lagos Nigeria Temple on 24 March 2025. Elder Alfred Kyungu, Africa West Area President, will preside at the event. The announcement was made in conjunction with the release of the render, plus the open house and dedication dates for the Farmington New Mexico Temple. The groundbreaking ceremonies for the Benin City Nigeria Temple, Budapest Hungary Temple and Natal Brazil Temple were made at the same time.[3]”Milestones Announced for Five Temples Around the World,” The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints News Release, 24 Mar. 2025.

Groundbreaking

Ground was broken for the Lagos Nigeria Temple on 10 May 2025, with Elder Alfred Kyungu — a General Authority Seventy and president of the Africa West Area — presiding.

Elder Kyungu explained in his remarks the difference between a meetinghouse and a temple. He noted that temples have been built throughout scripture and that it’s a blessing to have temples again in the Lord’s restored Church. “I testify that Jesus is the Christ and that the temple is the house of the Lord. It is a place to deepen our personal commitment to follow Jesus Christ.”[4]Randall, Joel. “Ground Broken for Lagos Nigeria Temple.” Church News, 15 May 2025, www.thechurchnews.com/temples/2025/05/12/ground-broken-for-lagos-nigeria-temple.
