Description

History

The Redlands California Temple sits on the Church’s original landholdings in San Bernardino colony, established in 1851 under the direction of Brigham Young. The ethnically diverse settlement provided colony life to pioneer settlers, African-American families, Jewish merchants, Spanish rancho families, former Mexican government officials, and local Cahuilla and Serrano Indians.[1]Marilyn Mills, “Video teaches diverse history,” Church News 16 Aug. 2003

In planning for a future city at the settlement, a center block was designated as the site for a temple. However, no record exists of any efforts to erect this temple as the Saints stay in San Bernardino was relatively short.[2]Richard Hopkins, Journal, 8 Mar. 1852.

Announcement

The Redlands California Temple was announced 20 April 2001, by the First Presidency, which included Church President Gordon B. Hinckley; President Thomas S. Monson, first counselor; and President James E. Faust, second counselor.

The Redlands California Temple was announced the same day as the Newport Beach California Temple and the Sacramento California Temple.

On Tuesday, October 9, 2001, the Planning Commission voted 4-1 in favor of granting final approval for plans of the proposed temple. Many were in attendance at the meeting who both supported and opposed the building project. As a final compromise before approval was granted, the Planning Commission requested developers and local church officials to have lighting of the temple shut off by 10:30 PM on operating days and by 10:00 PM on Sundays and Mondays. They did not, however, ask developers to consider another location noting that most churches in Redlands were in residential neighborhoods. They also understood the importance of the temple’s spire as a religious element and, thus, did not request that it be lowered. The director of Planning and Community Development, Jeffrey Shaw, determined through a traffic study that the temple would not impact Wabash and Fifth avenue traffic.

Groundbreaking

It rained the day before and the day after, but the skies were clear on 1 December 2001 when groundbreaking ceremony signifying the beginning of construction, was held. The event was conducted by Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the Seventy, president of the North America Northwest Area.[4]”Temple in Redlands”. Church News. December 8, 2001. Render Released

In conjunction with the groundbreaking, a render was released for the Redlands California Temple.

Construction Notes

Church members helped in the construction, for example members eagerly accepted assignments to provide meals for construction workers. Earlier in the construction, local Primaries had a project to collect rocks to be placed under the foundation of the temple and fountains on the grounds. The Primary children, and many others, painted pictures and wrote messages on the rocks, which reflected the broad base of the Church in the area as messages were written in a multitude of languages. Young children also donated their pennies to buy the palm trees that are now planted around the temple. Thousands volunteered to staff the many positions required for a successful open house.[5]Hill, Greg. “Redlands Temple in Inland Empire.” Church News, 11 Jan. 2024, www.thechurchnews.com/2003/9/20/23239684/redlands-temple-in-inland-empire.

Open House/Dedication announced

On June 21, 2003 the First Presidency announced the open house and dedication dates of the Redlands California Temple. The public open house will be held from Saturday Aug. 9, 2003, to Saturday, Sept. 3, 2003, except for Sundays Aug. 10, Aug. 17, Aug. 24 and Aug. 31.

The temple will be dedicated in four sessions on Sunday, Sept. 14, and will open for ordinance work on Monday, Sept. 15, 2003.[6]Deseret News. “New Redlands Temple Opening Is Announced.” Deseret News, 16 Jan. 2024, www.deseret.com/2003/6/21/20782979/new-redlands-temple-opening-is-announced.

Open House

From August 9 through September 6, 2003 an open house was held for the Redlands temple. About 11,000 people volunteered to help with the open house and more than 140,000 people were able to tour the temple and learn more about the purpose of Latter-day Saint temples. The temple was built on a lot that originally was home to an orange grove; during the open house visitors were served orange juice made from the trees that once stood there.[7]Redlands California Temple”. Dedication

Church President Gordon B. Hinckley dedicated the Redlands California Temple on 14 September 2003. About 23,000 members attended the four dedication services. In the dedicatory prayer President Hinckley stated, “This beautiful structure has come of the consecrations of Thy Saints in all the world. Bless them for their faith and faithfulness. Open the windows of heaven, as Thou hast promised through the prophet Malachi, and pour down blessings upon them that there shall not be room enough to receive them.” [9]President Hinckley Dedicates Redlands California Temple. 1 Nov. 2003, www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/ensign/2003/11/news-of-the-church/president-hinckley-dedicates-redlands-california-temple

[moroni option]

A 13½-foot statue of the angel Moroni (10 foot head to heal, 3.5 foot sphere) was placed atop the Redlands California Temple by crane on March 13, 2003, to hundreds of onlookers who watched from the adjacent stake center or around the construction barrier.[11]”Redlands temple receives statue of Angel Moroni,” Church News 20 Mar. 2003, 8 Apr. 2019 https://www.thechurchnews.com/archive/2003-03-22/redlands-temple-receives-statue-of-angel-moroni-23239.
