Retalhuleu is located near the Pacific coast in southwestern Guatemala.

History

The first Latter-day Saint missionaries arrived in Guatemala in 1947. On 2 April 2023, President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to construct the Retalhuleu Guatemala Temple at the April 2023 General Conference.[2]”The Church of Jesus Christ Will Build 15 New Houses of the Lord,” The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints News Release, 2 Apr. 2023. https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/april-2023-general-conference-new-temples. The Temple was announced in conjunction with 14 other temples.

Retalhuleu will be home to the country’s sixth temple. The Guatemala City Guatemala Temple, dedicated in December 1984, was the first temple built in Central America and the fourth built in Latin America. The Quetzaltenango Guatemala Temple was dedicated in December 2011. At the time of the announcement, the Cobán Guatemala Temple and Miraflores Guatemala City Guatemala Temple were under construction while the Huehuetenango Guatemala Temple was in the planning stages.
