Description

Modesto (Spanish for modest) is known for its rich agricultural history. Located in the Central Valley, the city is the county seat and largest city in Stanislaus County. California has more than 755,000 Latter-day Saints in over 1,200 congregations.

History

The town of Montpelier was settled in 1864 by Latter-day Saint pioneers. Brigham Young later gave the city the name “Montpelier,” the same name as the capital of his birth state of Vermont.

Announcement

On April 3, 2022, President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to construct the Montpelier Idaho Temple at the April 2022 General Conference. It was announced in conjunction with 16 other temples.[1]”President Nelson Announces 17 New Temples,” The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints News Release, 3 Apr. 2022. https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/prophet-new-temples-april-2022

Location Announcement

On May 20, 2022, the site location for the Montpelier Idaho Temple was announced as a 2.6-acre parcel located on Washington Street between North 6th Street and North 5th Street. The Church acquired nine properties in this block east of the Montpelier Tabernacle (renovated in 2015) including the former City Hall building. The city fixture, which was built in the late 1910s at the same time as the tabernacle, was demolished in March 2021. The City also granted its interest in an alleyway to the Church, and several of the residences were demolished or relocated. The property lies south of the Bear Lake County Library and the John A. Bagley House—a Queen Anne-style Victorian known as the Purple Sage that was built in 1902 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.[2]Montpelier Idaho Temple Site Announcement.” newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org, 20 May 2022, newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/montpelier-idaho-temple-site-announcement.

The location and size of the Montpelier temple were announced less than seven weeks after the temple was announced.

Render Released

On 24 April 2023, an official exterior rendering for the Montpelier Idaho Temple was released to the public.[3]Taylor, Scott. “See The Rendering of the Montpelier Idaho Temple.” Church News, 1 Feb. 2024, www.thechurchnews.com/temples/2023/4/24/23694033/montpelier-idaho-temple-artistic-rendering.

Groundbreaking Announced

On 4 March 2023 the First Presidency announced the groundbreaking date for the Montpelier Idaho Temple. Groundbreaking

The Montpelier Idaho Temple’s groundbreaking ceremony was held 17 June 2023, with Elder Ryan K. Olsen, a General Authority Seventy, presiding. More than 600 attendees were present at the event, including local leaders and Latter-day Saints.

In his remarks to those in attendance, Elder Olsen said, “At the end of the day, it really draws back to our individual relationship with the Savior, Jesus Christ. … As much as this is a community event, and the neighbors will drive by and see this beautiful edifice, at the end of the day when individuals are able to go in, it’s all about their personal relationship with [Heavenly Father and His Son].

Ground was broken for the Montpelier temple the same day as the Belo Horizonte Brazil Temple’s groundbreaking ceremony.
