History

Missionaries of the Church first arrived in Sapporo in 1905. By 1924, the mission had closed, leaving behind a handful of members—most of whom could not be located following World War II. When the mission reopened in 1948, missionaries returned to Hokkaidō, and the Church began to grow. As early as the 1960s, Hokkaidō members held to a belief that a temple would be built among them one day as described at the groundbreaking ceremony by Elder Koichi Aoyagi in a reflection of his own missionary experience there: “I was a missionary here in Hokkaidō 46 years ago. The members in the Sapporo Branch back then said to me, ‘Someday we will build a temple in Sapporo.’ I am happy that this day has come.”^[1]Carol Moses, “To Build a House of the Lord,” Tambuli Oct. 1980: 7.

On July 17, 1949, Elder Matthew Cowley made the first prophecy regarding the temples of Japan during the dedicatory services for the old Tokyo mission home—now the site of the Tokyo Japan Temple. Elder Harrison Ted Price, a missionary serving in the Northern Far East Mission, recorded in his journal: “In this prayer, he told of countless blessings from the Lord that have been enjoyed here to date, and went on to prophesy—’there will someday be many church buildings—and even TEMPLES built in the land.'”^[2]Elder Conan Grames and Sister Cindy Grames, “Ground is broken in Sapporo for Japan’s third temple,” Church News 27 Oct. 2011, 17 Nov. 2011 .

Location Announced

On May 2, 2010, the location of the Sapporo Japan Temple was announced as a large parcel of land on the Atsubetsu River, adjacent to the campus of Hokusei Gakuen University. A charming, well-known pedestrian bridge decorated with colorful circles and supported by a soaring, graceful arch—known locally as “Rainbow Bridge”—crosses the river at the north edge of the temple site. The land was once occupied by the Shin Sapporo Golf Center and offers convenient access from the Hokkaido Expressway and the Ooyachi Subway Station.^[5]Matthew Campbell, Email to Rick Satterfield, “Sapporo Japan Temple,” 16 Aug. 2010.

Groundbreaking

September 27, 2011 – October Groundbreaking Set for Sapporo Japan Temple

The joyful news of the Sapporo Japan Temple groundbreaking is spreading quickly among members following an announcement at a recent fireside and a posting on the official Church website for Japan. The former prime minister of Japan, Yukio Hatoyama, was a special guest at the groundbreaking. He flew to Sapporo to participate in the ceremony, and in his brief remarks, he pointed out the contribution of the Church and its members to the people of Tohoku, following the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck in March 2011. “You have made many social contributions in a spirit of service. I cannot express my feelings toward the quiet service you have rendered with kindness on behalf of the people.” Prime Minister Hatoyama joined in the ceremonial turning of ground, and as he left, he paused to wave to the crowd. February 6, 2013 – Signs Posted at the Sapporo Japan Temple Site

Hope of impending construction is rising at the Sapporo Japan Temple site where two signs have been posted including one that displays the site plan details. The Saints of Hokkaidō have been eagerly awaiting construction since ground was formally broken on October 22, 2011.

May 16, 2013 – Construction Equipment Arrives at Sapporo Japan Temple Site

Eighteen months after the formal groundbreaking ceremony for the Sapporo Japan Temple, construction has begun in earnest at the site where a fence has been erected, a trailer pulled on site, and stakes driven into the ground in preparation for site grading and excavation.

June 1, 2013 – Site Preparation Underway at Sapporo Japan Temple Site

With the demolition of an existing structure completed, site preparation activities are underway for the Sapporo Japan Temple, including removal of vegetation and site grading. The temple will stand on the northern island of Hokkaidō next to Hokusei Gakuen University.

June 27, 2013 – Mockup Erected at the Sapporo Japan Temple Site

At the construction site of the Sapporo Japan Temple, a mockup stands next to a staging area, which will be used for teaching and demonstrating as the various buildings in the complex are constructed including the temple, an arrival center, patron and missionary housing, and mission offices.

July 15, 2013 – Retaining Wall Gets Started in Sapporo, Japan

On the northern island of Hokkaidō, Japan’s third temple will soon rise in the capital city of Sapporo. Construction work continues with the installation of large retaining blocks. Several buildings are planned for the site including the temple, an arrival center, and housing facilities.

August 11, 2013 – Retaining Wall Up at the Sapporo Japan Temple Site

Blocks for the retaining wall at the Sapporo Japan Temple complex have been set in place, and a bright blue material has been carefully laid on the ground as a dust control measure. A nearby mock-up structure models the process for attaching exterior stone to the temple.

September 27, 2013 – Trees Arriving at the Sapporo Japan Temple Site

Activity at the Sapporo Japan Temple site has picked up in recent days with the arrival of various species of trees and shrubs. Trees will be planted throughout the grounds, which will also feature a beautiful pond on the east side of the temple and water features on the other three sides.

October 10, 2013 – Gathering Building Permits for the Sapporo Japan Temple

Construction at the Sapporo Japan Temple site continues as work permits are issued for the various construction activities. Permits have already been granted for a building demolition, retaining wall, and site grading. A building permit for the temple foundation was issued on September 28.

November 3, 2013 – Excavation Underway at Sapporo Japan Temple Site

With building permits secured, major excavation efforts are now underway at the Sapporo Japan Temple site. The temple will rise near Rainbow Bridge—a beautiful pedestrian bridge with a soaring arch and colorful circles along the railings.

January 5, 2014 – Preparing for Sapporo Japan Temple Foundation Walls

A blanket of snow covers the Sapporo Japan Temple site where progress has been made toward foundations for the temple and its supporting structures including housing facilities, residences, a mission office, and an arrival center.

March 5, 2014 – Sapporo Site Covered in Snow

Winter weather has slowed activity at the Sapporo temple site where below-grade work lies under blankets of snow, eager for spring sunshine.

April 15, 2014 – Subgrade Work Resumes at Sapporo Temple Site

Unencumbered by winter weather, laborers at the Sapporo temple site have assembled catwalks and delivered rebar and utility conduits to the five buildings concurrently under construction. The mission office pad is seen in the foreground.

May 8, 2014 – Forms and Rebar Rising at Sapporo Temple Site

While foundation walls are yet to be poured for the mission office and missionary housing, rebar is rising above ground level for the patron facilities at the Sapporo Japan Temple site, and a pair of girders has been erected for the temple itself.

June 3, 2014 – Preparing to Pour Main Floor Walls in Sapporo

Tall columns of rebar are being surrounded by concrete forms in preparation for pouring the main floor exterior walls of the Sapporo Japan Temple. A black waterproof coating has been applied to the foundations of other buildings on site.

June 22, 2014 – Sapporo Japan Temple Walls Rising

Work progresses on the exterior walls for the Sapporo Japan Temple, where concrete forms are in place and scaffolding has been erected. A concrete pad has been poured for the mission office, and tarp fencing surrounds the housing buildings.

July 5, 2014 – Steel Beams Peek Over Berm in Sapporo, Japan

A pair of steel beam structures has appeared at the Sapporo Japan Temple, which can been seen rising over the berm on the eastern side of the site. The beams will hold the temple spire, which will stand over the center of the building.

July 15, 2014 – Apostles Visit Japan

A recently produced video (in Japanese) and newsletter document the visit of Elder Cook and Elder Christofferson to Japan in late May including close-up shots of the construction progress of the Sapporo Japan Temple.

September 2, 2014 – Pouring Exterior Walls for the Sapporo Japan Temple

Peering through the trees that line the campus of Hokusei Gakuen University, the rising exterior walls of the Sapporo Japan Temple can be seen as a mix of concrete, forms, and rebar. Construction can also be viewed from nearby Rainbow Bridge.

September 15, 2014 – Utility Work at the Sapporo Japan Temple

A large crane is lifting construction materials into the rising exterior walls of the Sapporo Japan Temple as workers make initial utility runs. A mock-up stands near the temple that displays the exterior façades for the various buildings on site.

November 14, 2014 – A View of the Sapporo Temple from Rainbow Bridge

A pedestrian bridge decorated with brightly colored circles offers wonderful views of the Sapporo Japan Temple construction site where the rising buildings have been surrounded by mesh tarps. The mission office can be seen in the foreground with the temple in the background.

December 1, 2014 – Sapporo Japan Temple Retaining Wall

The large retaining wall along the perimeter of the Sapporo Japan Temple site is being faced with a light-colored stone. Work on the temple proper is shielded from view by a tenting material that surrounds the building.

December 15, 2014 – Snow Returns to Sapporo Japan Temple Site

Faithful photographers continue to document construction of the Sapporo Japan Temple, despite the deterrent of winter weather. The roof for the mission office has recently been installed, and laborers can be heard working inside the temple.

January 1, 2015 – New Year’s Day at the Sapporo Temple Site

A new year dawned at the Sapporo Japan Temple this morning where construction continues on the five buildings that comprise the complex. The temple only lacks a spire to complete the exterior shape of the sacred structure.

January 12, 2015 – Preparing for Sapporo Japan Temple Spire

Scaffolding has appeared atop the roof of the Sapporo Japan Temple, as preparations are made for installing the spire framework. When visiting the site, workers can be heard inside the temple, though they are shielded from view.

January 23, 2015 – Pouring Concrete at the Sapporo Japan Temple

Concrete pours have reached the third level of the Sapporo Japan Temple, which is kept warm by a protective layer of sheeting that surrounds the building. Sapporo is the fourth largest city in Japan and hosted the 1972 Winter Olympics.

February 1, 2015 – Capstones Revealed at Sapporo Japan Temple

With a portion of the scaffolding and sheeting removed from the Sapporo Japan Temple, construction observers can now see the white capstones that have been installed atop the roof. Similar Japanese-inspired stonework will be added shortly.

March 10, 2015 – Sapporo Japan Temple Tower Base

The removal of sheeting from the scaffolding that surrounds the Sapporo Japan Temple tower has revealed the work that has been accomplished on assembling the tower base. A long spire will eventually be attached to the base.

March 16, 2015 – Stonework and Window Installation in Sapporo

Construction progress on the exterior of the Sapporo Japan Temple is now visible, as a portion of the sheeting that has surrounded the temple for months has been removed. Several windows have been installed and stonework attached.

March 21, 2015 – Landscaping Rocks Added to Sapporo Temple Site

Landscaping boulders have appeared in front of the Sapporo Japan Temple where plans call for a beautiful pond and foot bridge. Just west of the temple lies the Atsubetsu River, which is spanned by Rainbow Bridge, seen in the background.

April 15, 2015 – Sapporo Japan Temple Spire Awaiting Installation

The spire that will be attached atop the Sapporo Japan Temple is on site, surrounded by scaffolding and awaiting installation. Work on the entrance pond continues, which will feature boulders surrounded by water. Satellite imagery of the temple complex is now available.

April 29, 2015 – Spring Arrives at the Sapporo Japan Temple

With the coming of spring, flowering trees are now abloom near the site of the Sapporo Japan Temple. The majority of the temple has been faced with exterior stone and landscaping efforts continue on the grounds. Installation of the spire is anticipated.

May 15, 2015 – Angel Moroni Installed Atop Sapporo Japan Temple

The traditional gold-leafed statue of the angel Moroni was lifted into place atop the Sapporo Japan Temple this morning. Yesterday, a large crane hoisted the temple’s single spire over the center of the building where it was fastened into place, and scaffolding was erected.

May 23, 2015 – Sapporo Japan Temple and Housing Facility

New photographs of the Sapporo Japan Temple complex show the progress that has been made on the Temple Missionary Housing facility that stands behind the temple next to the new mission office and mission president residence.

May 25, 2015 – A Crane Operator’s Prayers Answered in Sapporo

A new video tells the story of crane operator Masayuki Oota who lifted the angel Moroni atop the Sapporo Japan Temple. He had prayed for the opportunity for 15 years since witnessing the raising of Moroni atop the Fukuoka Japan Temple.

June 28, 2015 – Summertime at the Sapporo Japan Temple

The leaves are green and the skies are blue at the Sapporo Japan Temple where construction is advancing swiftly. Scaffolding is coming down as the exterior nears completion with the obvious exception of the cornerstone.

July 12, 2015 – Sapporo Japan Temple Gardens

New trees and plants are appearing at the Sapporo Japan Temple site where landscaping efforts are well underway. A large pond near the temple entrance will feature large boulders that have been decoratively placed in the pond bed.

July 31, 2015 – Housing Facilities at the Sapporo Japan Temple

The exteriors are complete for the three housing facilities that surround the Sapporo Japan Temple. One building will be for the mission office and mission home, another for temple missionaries, and the third for temple patrons.

August 20, 2015 – Landscaping Progress at Sapporo Japan Temple

More and more trees are appearing around the Sapporo Japan Temple site as workers shift their focus from the buildings’ exteriors to the buildings’ interiors and grounds. The distinctive edifice will be the third operating temple in Japan.

New plants and decorative rock-faced walls now surround the Sapporo Japan Temple site. The temple features details inspired by traditional Japanese architecture.

August 12, 2016 – Stage Built for Sapporo Temple Cornerstone Ceremony

A temporary stage has been constructed at the southeast corner of the Sapporo Japan Temple where the cornerstone ceremony will be held on dedication day, scheduled for Sunday, August 21. Approximately 13,000 guests participated in the two-week public open house held in July.

August 21, 2016 – 151st Operating Temple Dedicated in Sapporo, Japan

Japan’s third temple, located on the island of Hokkaido, became the 151st operating temple of the Church today. President Russell M. Nelson of the Quorum of the Twelve dedicated the Sapporo Japan Temple in three dedicatory sessions broadcast throughout the country.

Cultural Celebration

On Saturday evening, 20 August 2016, the youth of the Church in the area performed in a cultural celebration honoring Japan’s history as well as the history of the Church in the country.

During the celebration, President Russell M. Nelson then of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles commented, “We have the exciting privilege of being part of this latter-day work, when the gospel will go to every nation and those people of Japan particularly now will be able to have all the blessings of the temple.”
